Cheapest Hybrid Car

Cheapest hybrid car for new hybrid cars based on MSRP is the Toyota Prius, according to the Top 100 Cars by Green Rating from Yahoo.

2008 Toyota Prius - Base trim
Hybrid - Electric
45/48 MPG
MSRP: $20,950

When calculating the final price for the hybrid car, keep in mind the tax incentives/rebates provided at the state and federal level.

The most important of these rebates is the Energy Act of 2005, which is a revised tax credit system for hybrid cars and light trucks.

The new code came into effect in January 2006 and will be phased out and reevaluated again in 2010.

The code allows you to combine two different types of credits, ranging from $250 to $3,400, which are deducted from the your tax bill. The credit is void if your tax bill goes below zero.

Unfortunately, according to the information at fueleconomy.gov/feg/tax_hybrid.shtml, the phase out period for the tax credit has already ended for Toyota hybrids and the tax credit no longer applies to Toyota hybrids.
