Electric Hybrid Car It Yourself

Electric hybrid car it yourself projects are available, and there are even competitions for hybrid car developers and students in this field.

One of the more famous self made hybrid cars was the Opel GT made in 1979 by David Arthurs of Springdale, Arkansas.

The details of his project are available at Mother Earth News website for David Arthurs hybrid electric car from 1979.

For his project, he used an on-board efficient electric generator, enabling the vehicle to also run on battery power for short distances.

The technology he used to hook up the lawnmover engine together with the electric one was developed during the WW2.

The project cost Dave only about $1,500 (in 1979 dollars).

In essence, the car utilized a gas lawn-mower engine to drive a generator, which-in turn-supplies the vehicle's drive motor with electricity.
