Hybrid Car Definition

Hybrid car definition relies on the fact that these cars use two sources of power, typically resulting in a hybrid of a gas (petrol) engine and an electric one.

More closely, a hybrid car uses two or more distinct power sources to propel the car. These sources may include:

rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) and a fueled power source (internal combustion engine or fuel cell) for vehicle propulsion
Air and internal combustion engines
Human powered bicycle with battery or gas engine assist

However, the most common references to hybrids are to the type that can be described as hybrid-electric vehicles (HEV).

These types use internal combustion engines and electric motors to power the car.
