Hybrid Car Works

Hybrid car works in combining two power sources, typically a petrol engine and an electric engine.

The first hybrid engine was designed over a hundred years ago by Ferdinand Porsche with his Lohner-Porsche Mixte Wagen, in 1902.

There are many types of hybrid engine combinations, of which the petrol-electric combination is the most popular.

Other combinations, however, have even more promise when it comes to fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness.

For example, a diesel-electric hybrid car has been under development in Volkswagen that gets 118 MPG, mainly due to to the efficiency of the diesel engine itself in combination with standard hybrid technology.

Other advancement in these combinations has been the introduction of an ethanol-electric engine from Saab, which uses E85 fuel engine together with an electric engine, resulting, according to Saab, at some 1/4th of CO2 emissions in comparison to other hybrid engines, which use standard petrol for their electric engine counterpart.
