Hybrid Cars Batteries

Hybrid cars batteries include the traction battery and the auxiliary 12-volt battery, which powers accessories and the car's computer.

Of these two battery types that power the hybrid car, the traction battery is also used in forklifts, electric Golf carts, and electric motorcycles.

There are three types of traction batteries, lead-acid batteries, absorbed glass mat (AGM) lead acid batteries, and Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.

Emerging alternatives to these include lithium ion batteries and fuel cells.

In comparison, the other battery type, the auxiliary 12-volt battery is used to operate the headlights and various running lights, instruments, radio, heater fan, and other components.

In some self-build electric car and hybrid car conversions, the builders may opt to eliminate the auxiliary battery, using only a DC-DC converter to produce the required 12 volt output. This method has the advantage of eliminating the weight of the auxiliary battery.
