This kit car with hybrid technology has a modular design, meaning you can to make choices according to your budget and performance goals. This car has been build as a prototype, and for that project, more than half the cost of parts went to the electric propulsion system. A plan to duplicate the concept car design with Li-Ion-batteries will top $25,000 in construction costs, according to the manufacturer. However, using lead-acid batteries can save you the cost between the two types of battery systems. At the lower end of the scale for construction costs, building a diesel-only vehicle that is capable of 125-mpg can be built for less than $10,000 according to the company. Also, the modularity of the design allows you to add the electric power train components later on. The plans for the XR-3 Standard package are sold as of August 2008 for $170. The package includes eighteen D-size (24 x 36 inch) drawing sheets, one 32 x 64 inch full-size template sheet, and a 149-page construction/technical manual with over 200 photos and illustrations. The Deluxe Plans Package goes for $200 and includes everything from the Standard version plus two CD-ROMs and one DVD, containing SolidWorks 2D CAD drawings and 3D models, along with DXF files necessary for water-jet or laser cutting flat metal parts. The second CD-ROM contains a construction manual set up to run in a web browser with click-to-enlarge high-resolution color photos, video clips, and SolidWorks eDrawings 2D drawings and 3D models.
