Hydrogen hybrid cars concept designs from American car manufacturers, including the Ford Airstream Concept and Chevy Volt Hydrogen Concept.

This space age design is also forward looking in its design for a power source.

The concept car is powered by a plug-in hydrogen hybrid fuel-cell, that can function when temperatures drop below freezing, which is a major technological advancement in car fuel cell technology.

The fuel cell is technology of Ballard, and provides electricity to keep the lithium-ion batteries of the car charged, not actually drive the vehicle, as has been the case in previous fuel cell implementations.

This allows the fuel cell to be smaller in size, which also translates to reduced costs and should also bring better durability, as the cell runs in a steady-state.

The Chevy Volt Hydrogen uses fifth generation fuel cell technology of GM with lithium-ion battery technology.

To bring down the size and cost of the lithium-ion battery packs GM does the related research and development with four outside battery companies.

This has led the fuel cells used in the Chevy Volt Hydrogen to be about half the size of previous fuel cells, yet providing the same power and performance.
