NIMH Hybrid Car Battery

The biggest NIMH hybrid car battery manufacturer is Sanyo, which supplies batteries to Honda Accord hybrid, the Civic hybrid, and the Ford Escape hybrid.

The company, however, is approaching the next generation of NIMH batteries in co-operation with Germany's Volkswagen since 2006.

In the partnership, Sanyo will provide most of the technology and know-how in developing the high-power, light-weight nickel-hydrogen batteries.

The nickel metal hydride battery business was in fact acquired from Toshiba (Toshiba Battery Co., Ltd.). The manufacture base that used to be Toshiba's in Takasaki, was newly inaugurated as Sanyo Energy Takasaki Co., Ltd.

Sanyo is still the world number 1 producer of rechargeable batteries, including the NIMH hybrid batteries.

Recent product innovations from Sanyo in battery technology for hybrid cars include the Eneloop battery, which is in fact a "hybrid" rechargeable NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) battery which will retain a charge for significantly longer than batteries using standard NiMH.

The Sanyo Eneloop line competes against such products as Rayovac's Hybrid Rechargeable line.
